Mushing in Asturias; Overview
The Principado de Asturias mushing association is the first colective of mushers and mushing lovers based in Asturias, in the north of Spain. The club was established in January 2000 by two mushing enthusiasts, Samuel Fernández and José Barcia, both currently president and vice president of the association. We are a group of friends who have become the first mushing club of Asturias , to try to develope in our region this activity.We are a few people at the moment but growing year by year, both people and dogs. We want to be the reference for all those beguinners who wnat to start to practice sled dog sports but don't know well how. At the same time, the members can get the licenses for running official competitions under the colors of the Principate of Asturias winter sports federation (fdipa).
We are trying to develope this sport in our region and teach all the people interested in mushing, specially . Other planned activities are:
Build mushing equipment for all our members: Karts, sledges, harnesses,...
To compilate mushing information
To take an active part in races, training camps, ...
To strengthen ties with other mushing clubs in Spain
To organize some races here in Asturias
Apart from our association, the history of mushing in Asturias has two important names: Alejo Sabugo and Germán Colla. Both of them raced Pirena during the 90's, the first one in fact was European Champion in malamute class, but nowadays they are retired
Places for training
Although the most of the people from Europe think that Spain is just sun,beach and bullfires. Wrong,wrong,wrong. I have to say that ...WE KNOW WHAT SNOW IS ...
In fact we have two winter resorts in our region with mountains over 2000 meters high. Anyway we just use the sleds in the middle of the season, from december to the begining of march: From september to december and from march to may we race and train dryland
Snow:
VALGRANDE-PAJARES ski resort: It has a short cross country skiing circuit.It's not the best for the sleds but sometimes we visit it for some ski-joring
SAN ISIDRO ski resort: No cross country skiing circuit but is possible from SALENCIAS to CEBOLLEDO.
-VALDEOLEA ( Cantabria -Palencia limits):240 kms from the center of Asturias, but a lot of snow,lots and lots of kilometers.Here we use to tread the snow with some snow-motorbike
Dryland:
We usually train in a green area based between Oviedo and Aviles, two of the three main cities of Asturias.Trials with more than 20 kms
